Approaching the finish line

Well, it's been awhile since the last devlog, despite work on Tracer not slowing down at all. So, what's new? The biggest, and I think most exciting change is the addition of procedural music! Nash is the genius behind the sound in this, which deserves a write-up all its own cause it's so damn cool. I think eventually he/I/we will do a more technical breakdown of how the music works, so for now I'll just say that each hazard you race past has its own voice, and each of the 6 stages has its own theme, which makes for some pretty awesome evolving music as you play through the game.

Outside of the music, my favorite new thing is a first-person camera option. There's something about the first-person view that makes everything feel faster and more intense, and I highly recommend trying it out by toggling cameras with the T key. It's my preferred way to play, and I nearly made it the default, but opted to leave that as 3rd-person since it's a bit more forgiving and your ship is fun to see.

The in-game UI and menus are also new, with the HUD tracking your current speed, whether or not you have a shield, distance traveled, number of stages completed, and number of bonus points earned. Previously the HUD was all text based, which was frankly pretty boring for a racing game.

We're fast approaching the final version of Tracer, and I think it's fair to say that it's finally feature complete. There are some odds and ends to wrap up, and probably more sound-related updates, but it's really close!
